Through work on the Smithsonian’s Deep Reef Observation Project (DROP), our scientists are seeing species in their habitats for the first time, such as these hermit crabs affectionately called “The Three Amigos.” This is the first time the species (Pylopagurus discoidalis) has been photographed alive.

Behold the beautiful Sea Pen!

These animals are closely related to jellyfish. They are part of Class Anthozoa while jellyfish are part of Class Scyphozoa. Unlike jellyfish, anthozoans never go through a free-floating medusa stage, they remain polyps throughout their lifecycle.

Although they are sedentary, sea pens still undergo sexual reproduction. Individuals release eggs and sperm in coordination at certain points during the year.

Analysis of annual sea pen growth rings has shown that these animals can live for upwards of 100 years!

Hymenopus coronatus, Arthropoda
One of my favorite insects, the orchid mantis!
Found in the Rain Forests of Southeast Asia, this mantis showcases fantastic mimicry. It hides itself among beautiful orchid flowers as it awaits its prey. Mantises have strong modified forearms for tightly grasping their prey.
These guys are top dogs in the insect world. They catch and feed on mostly lepidopteran prey which include butterflies and moths.

Some of my new pets enjoying their noms :)

Snails are adorable!

Coccinellidae, Coleoptera, Arthropoda

Ladybirds are one of the many beautiful species of beetles. Most people don’t know that they are also top predators in the insect worlds. Both ladybird adults and larvae specialize on capturing aphids. Because of this ladybirds are often used as a biological pest control in agriculture.

Pictured at the top is a ladybird larvae.

Pictured in the middle is a ladybird adult saying hello!

Pictured at the bottom is a ladybird eating its favorite snack.

Chrysaora melanaster, Cnidaria

I found these japanese sea nettles while looking around the vancouver aquarium.

Did you know jellyfish were around before the dinosaurs? They are thought to have been around as long as 650 million years ago.

Brides of the oceans.. by Mohammadali f.
Jellyfish are found in every ocean of the world, and although they are stunning to look at, they can be painful to touch. Their tentacles are packed with tiny explosive capsules called cnidae. When stimulated these capsules fire toxins and stinging organelles called nematocysts that can capture and paralyze pray.
Jellies are basically the most beautiful badasses you’ve ever met.
